Cathedral Hill Retirement Residence exemplifies how landscape architecture can elevate urban living through thoughtful public realm design within a sensitive heritage context. The project transforms a former surface parking lot into a vibrant pedestrian environment anchored by Philosopher’s Walk, an accessible mid-block connection that strengthens walkability between Sparks and Queen Streets. High-quality paving, integrated seating, planting, and lighting create a welcoming civic space that supports movement, gathering, and rest for residents and the public alike. Along Sparks Street, an active ground-floor interface and landscaped patio animate the streetscape, while a recessed entry plaza and curved hardscape forms establish a dignified sense of arrival. The landscape design carefully frames views of Christ Church Cathedral, complements historic materials, and enhances the cultural character of the Cathedral Hill Heritage Conservation District. By prioritizing accessibility, human scale, and environmental quality, the project demonstrates how attention to the ground plane can meaningfully improve urban experience and reinforce the role of landscape architecture in shaping inclusive, resilient cities.

La résidence pour personnes âgées Cathedral Hill illustre parfaitement comment l'architecture paysagère peut améliorer la qualité de vie urbaine grâce à une conception réfléchie de l'espace public dans un contexte patrimonial sensible. Le projet transforme un ancien stationnement en un espace piétonnier dynamique ancré par la promenade du « Philosophe », un passage qui relie les rues Sparks et Queen. Le revêtement de haute qualité, les sièges intégrés aux murets, les plantations et l’éclairage créent un espace civique accueillant qui favorise les déplacements et les espaces de convivialité pour les résidents. Le long de Sparks Street, une interface active au rez-de-chaussée et un patio paysager anime le paysage urbain, tandis qu'une entrée en retrait crée un parvis. La conception paysagère encadre soigneusement la vue sur la cathédrale Christ Church, complète l’approche historique.
