Fort Mississauga

Designed to replace nearby Fort George and protect British lands during the War of 1812, Fort Mississauga National Historic site is located on Lake Ontario’s shore, at the mouth of the Niagara River. Parks Canada initiated a project to restore this historic site, which involved developing a solution for a new Observation Deck and enhancing the restoration works identified for existing heritage elements and structures.

Due to the extent of excavation and work required to restore historical structures, design strategies focused on further protecting built elements and extending the life of the fort. Included in the restoration project were the Entry Gate Walls, Powder Magazines, and the Sally Port. A careful and sensitive approach helped to achieve a seamless integration of historical elements of the site with the modern uses and access required.

Conçu pour remplacer le fort George voisin et protéger les terres britanniques pendant la guerre de 1812, le Fort-Mississauga est situé sur la rive du lac Ontario, à l'embouchure de la rivière Niagara. Parcs Canada a lancé un projet de restauration de ce site historique, comprenant l'élaboration d'une nouvelle terrasse d'observation et l'amélioration des aménagements autour des bâtiments patrimoniaux existants.

Compte tenu de l'ampleur des travaux d'excavation et de restauration des bâtiments historiques, les stratégies de conception se sont concentrées sur la protection des éléments construits et sur la prolongation de la durée de vie du fort. Les murs de la porte d'entrée, les poudrières et le port Sally ont été inclus dans le projet de restauration. Une approche prudente et sensible a permis d'intégrer harmonieusement les éléments historiques du site aux nouveaux usages des visiteurs.
