The exterior campus of the Victoria Memorial Museum is a strong representation of the Canadian landscape and a complement to the building’s iconic architecture and historic forms. The design concept was meant to exemplify the various ‘Regions of Canada’s Landscape’ and provide a direct reflection of the biodiversity that exists across Canadian landscapes. As an extension of the museum, the design offers visitors the opportunity to explore these aspects and provides formal and informal learning opportunities.

Five key landscape zones were identified for inclusion in the design: the Arctic, Boreal Forest, Deciduous Woodland, Prairies, and Edible Landscape. Existing trees were preserved, and additional distinctive plant material was selected to reflect the fundamental species found in each of these categories. As an additional feature, a substantial sculpture in the shape of an iceberg was designed by Canadian artist Bill Lishman. The iceberg, situated in the ‘Tundra’ portion of the park, is an iconic feature of Ottawa’s urban landscape. In alignment with the museum’s master plan, the landscape design respects the historic forms and uses of the site while inspiring an understanding and respect for nature.
